His Life Was Tumultuous
“The Band” may sound like an unremarkable name for a legendary roots-rock group, and Rick Danko wasn’t exactly the flashy headline-grabbing frontman. Shockingly, though, in his 56 short years on the planet, Danko managed to pack in more tragedy, addiction, drama, and danger than most rock stars could ever dream of.
Keep reading to uncover how the bassist from “the greatest band in the history of the universe”—as George Harrison called them—could have such a chaotic side…
1. He Had Humble Beginnings, Eh?
The Band are the pioneers of the Americana genre, but here’s a twist—four out of five members, including Rick Danko, were actually Canadian. Danko entered the world on December 23, 1943, in the now-vanished farming hamlet of Blayney, Ontario. His rural roots would provide him with heaping helpings of hillbilly cred—and his parents definitely enabled the habit…
2. He Was Born Country
Music was in the Danko DNA and Rick’s parents encouraged him every step of the way. A sickly kid plagued by asthma, allergies, and ADHD (for which doctors prescribed anti-depressants), young Rick found his escape in music. To lift his spirits, his parents let him stay up late and listen to the Grand Ole Opry on the radio—and it worked.
By first grade, Danko was already setting the stage for future fame by serenading his classmates on the banjo like a pint-sized country star.
3. He Took A Leap
At just 14, Danko made a bold move—he dropped out of school to chase his musical dreams. Playing in a band with his brothers and a high school music teacher, he quickly became the talk of the local music scene. His raw talent was hard to ignore, and it wasn’t long before someone influential took notice—someone with the power to catapult his career to the next level.
But, as Danko would soon learn, big breaks often bring even bigger challenges…
4. His Dreams Were Coming True…For Now
Opportunity came knocking and for a teenage wannabe rock star, it didn’t get better than this. Danko’s band, The Starlights, caught the attention of none other than music legend Ronnie Hawkins, a powerhouse of the 1960s music scene. Soon enough, The Starlights were opening for “Rompin’ Ronnie” himself, and 17-year-old Danko’s dreams seemed to be coming true.
But just when it looked like life couldn’t get any sweeter, things took a sharp turn.
5. He Was In The Right Place At the Right Time
When you’re hot, you’re hot, right? Danko was on fire, but fate had another surprise up its sleeve. Hawkins had fired a member of his own backing band, The Hawks, and offered Danko the spot. Talk about an upgrade! The Hawks—now featuring Danko with Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, and Robbie Robertson—soon realized they had a rare chemistry.
But just as they were hitting their stride, Danko put everything they built at risk.
6. He Wasn’t A Schmoozer
Ronnie Hawkins didn’t just play music—he created legends. Robbie Robertson described working with him in the early years as a “rockabilly boot camp,” and Hawkins ran a tight ship. His genius wasn’t limited to music, though. He was a master marketer.
To boost his band’s buzz, he insisted The Hawks mix and mingle with the crowd after shows. It was a good strategy—too bad Danko had other plans.
7. He Bit The Hand That Fed Him
Was Danko’s next move brave, romantic, or just fueled by the self-confidence that comes with god-level musical talents? Whatever the reason, Danko boldly defied Hawkins’ demands to schmooze with the crowds—because he’d rather sit with his girlfriend.
Hawkins wasn’t impressed. He banned Danko’s girlfriend from the shows and warned him: Mess up again and you’re out.
8. He Paid The Price
The boss (AKA Hawkins) had laid down the law—or so he thought. One fateful night, he spotted Danko’s girlfriend in the crowd, and it was game over. According to Robertson, Hawkins’ face turned bright red and he glared at Rick. The whole band could sense the danger in the air.
As soon as the show was over Hawkins fired Danko, turned on his heel, and stormed out of the club.
9. His Firing Sparked Something
Although the door labeled “The Hawks” had just been slammed in Danko’s face—it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Behind the scenes, the band members knew that they were destined for something bigger than Ronnie Hawkins’ backing band.
10. He Was On A Mission
By early 1964, Robertson, Hudson, Manuel, and Helm also parted ways with Hawkins. Together with Danko, the five of them forged ahead on a new mission: no divas, no egos—just five equals ready to make music history.
Unfortunately, having Danko in the mix meant that their journey was about to have its share of wild twists and turns.
11. He Was Burned By Love
Just as the new group, now called Levon and the Hawks, was gaining serious momentum, disaster struck—and it came from a pretty unexpected source. Danko had been dating a girl who, as it turned out, already had a boyfriend. This jilted lover wasn’t about to let it slide, either.
Fueled by revenge, he set his sights on Danko—and dragged the rest of the band down with him—big time…
12. He Had A Target On His Back
From the jilted boyfriend’s perspective, his revenge plot was a total masterpiece. Just as Danko and his bandmates were crossing back into Canada after a US gig, border officers swooped in. Why? The bitter boyfriend had tipped them off, claiming the band was smuggling a trunkful of pot. The result? Chaos, suspicion, and a whole lot of trouble.
13. He Was In Deep
Even though the group wasn’t actually smuggling a trunkful of the devil’s lettuce, Danko did have an ounce of pot in his pocket—and it was enough to land everyone in hot water. The authorities charged the whole band and stuck them with a staggering $10,000 bail each. Talk about a career catastrophe at the worst possible time.
But just when things seemed hopeless, drummer Levon Helm cooked up a totally mind-blowing—and extremely risky—plan.
14. He Took Desperate Measures
Modern problems require modern solutions, and Helm’s fix was a doozy. He recruited his girlfriend Cathy for his outrageous plan: Seduce one of the key officers in a seedy Toronto motel. Well, folks, Cathy went above and beyond the call of duty. After going downtown on the cop, she told him that she was a minor…
15. He Had A Lot Riding On This Plan
Surprise! The flabbergasted officer, who was also the key witness in the band’s case, freaked out and took off faster than you can say “Sweet, sweet justice”. Miraculously, Helm’s plan had worked—Danko was given a suspended sentence, and the judge dropped the charges against the rest of the band. Now there’s a happy ending!
16. He Had A Superstar Superfan
That wasn’t the last of Danko’s twists and turns, though. As the smuggling drama was going on, Danko and his bandmates got lucky when they landed on the radar of none other than folk legend Bob Dylan. Dylan wasn’t just a fan; he wanted to hire Levon and the Hawks to be his backing band.
It sounded like a dream gig but, as always, there was a bit of a catch.
17. He Was In For Another Wild Ride
First question: Why would Bob Dylan need a band? In 1965, he was a folk legend, and his guitar and harmonica were enough to captivate crowds. So, how did Danko and his bandmates fit in? Simple: Dylan was standing at a crossroads, and his next steps—with Danko and the guys by his side—were going to be electrifying.
18. He Stepped Into Another Controversy
Bob Dylan has never been one to pander to fans, but his mid-60s tour with Danko and the guys (who were now being billed as “The Band”) was his boldest statement yet—an epic middle finger to his folk followers. Dylan wanted to rock out with The Band, and that’s exactly what he did. But the backlash? It was ferocious…
19. He Was Forced To Face The Wrath
When The Band hit the stage and let loose with their electric guitars, booming drums, and powerful bass, Dylan’s folk-loving fans were stunned—and not in a good way. They responded by booing, heckling, and even throwing stuff at the band. The tension reached a fever pitch when one fan screamed “Judas!” accusing Dylan of selling out and betraying his folk roots.
The heat was too much for drummer Levon Helm, who ultimately bailed on the tour.
20. He Bonded With His Battle Mates
What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, right? Despite the chaos, Dylan, Danko, and the remaining bandmates powered through, growing tighter with every show. Not only did their playing improve, but they also formed a bond—like warriors in the trenches. As Robbie Robertson put it, “Bob didn’t budge. The world was wrong and we were right”.
Bob Dylan didn’t budge, but he sure did, ahem, indulge.
21. He Was Not Sober
You’d have to be crazy to raw dog such a controversial, chaotic tour, and most of the band were not that nuts. In 1966, Bob Dylan said, “It takes a lot of medicine to keep up with this pace…It’s very hard, man”. Indeed. One wild night after dropping some acid, Rick Danko poured his heart out to Dylan…
22. He Had A Lotta Nerve
Ah, the 60s were something, weren’t they? When else could you get high, look music royalty in the eye, and say that you’re destined for bigger and better things? That’s exactly what 22-year-old Danko did to Bob Dylan, who was basically his boss. Danko wasn’t just being arrogant either—he’d been playing long enough to know that he was onto something.
But as they say, “Man plans, God laughs”—and Danko’s path to greatness was about to take some unexpected detours.
23. He Couldn’t Break Free
Not too long after that heart-to-heart, disaster hit like a wrecking ball. Bob Dylan suffered a brutal motorcycle accident, throwing everything into chaos. Sure, Danko had been thinking of stepping out from Dylan’s shadow, but not like this. Suddenly, The Band was adrift.
24. He Was In For a Rough Ride
As Justin Timberlake would say, “This is going to ruin the tour”. After Dylan’s devastating accident, Danko summed it up perfectly: “Bob broke some bones in his neck and was in total recuperation mode. We didn’t know where Levon was. We were road musicians without a road to go on”.
Just when it seemed like Danko was stuck in a rut, he found himself in Woodstock, where Dylan was recuperating. What came next would change music forever.
25. He Needed A Time Out
While visiting Woodstock, the city-dwelling Danko had a revelation. The fresh air and open spaces brought him back to his rural roots—and he fell in love. He rented a salmon-colored ranch house that they nicknamed Big Pink and even adopted Bob Dylan’s dog, Hamlet. It was the perfect chance to relax, far from the angry crowds.
26. He Was Making Magic Happen
Whether it was the vibe of Big Pink or the magic touch of the music gods, Danko suddenly found himself at the center of something extraordinary. Nearly every day, Dylan would drop by to jam in the basement with him and The Band. In a movie-worthy twist, long-lost drummer Levon Helm even returned to the fold.
For Danko, it was like a bohemian country dream come true—at least for now.
27. He Was Hurtling Toward Trouble
Life in the countryside gave Danko plenty of room to breathe, but one fateful night proved that even idyllic mountain living had its dangers. While cruising down Ohayo Mountain Road with bandmate Richard Manuel, the peaceful vibe took a sharp—and messy—turn.
28. He Had An Unusual Plan
As Danko and Manuel sped along the winding road, a deer suddenly jumped out in front of their car. They hit the brakes, but it was too late. The animal didn’t survive the collision. Danko came up with a bizarre idea: He got the rest of the band to help him load the giant carcass into his car—and let’s just say that it wasn’t because he cared about highway safety.
29. He Had A Special Skill
In a move that would have made Joe Rogan proud, Danko had big plans for the deer (and they didn’t include a burial). In his youth, he had been a butcher, so he was definitely not afraid of a little blood and guts, especially if it was going to make for some good eating.
As he prepared to skin the deer, a queasy Robertson and his wife Dominique made a hasty exit. For Danko, it was just another day in the wild.
30. He Put It All On The Line
Musically speaking, the time spent at Big Pink was better than any boot camp. After a few blissful months of jamming, Danko and the band had finally channeled their own voices into enough material for a debut album, Music from Big Pink. With a tour on the horizon, things were looking brighter than ever.
31. He Took The Highway To The Danger Zone
Danko had a knack for living on the edge, but this time he went too far. One fateful night, he was “a little too drunk, a little too high” behind the wheel and decided to race his bandmate Levon Helm through the twisting mountain roads. What could possibly go wrong?
32. He Messed Up
As the fog thickened and the countryside blurred past, Danko floored it, desperate to catch up with Helm. Bad move. On a hairpin turn, the car slid out of Danko’s control. He desperately slammed on the brakes, but it was too late—he plowed right into a tree.
What followed was a harrowing ordeal that would leave him fighting for his life, one agonizing hour at a time.
33. His Life Was On The Line
Ah, isolation. One of the greatest things about the country can also be the most dangerous. After the crash, Danko’s shattered car lay hidden in the woods, and for six hours, Danko sat unconscious, critically injured, and bleeding out. It was pure luck that the band’s manager eventually stumbled upon the wreck.
When he pulled Danko’s battered, blood-soaked body from the car, Danko jolted awake screaming in pain and terror.
34. He Was In A World Of Hurt
The human body is an amazing thing. Danko’s initial shock and adrenaline got him back home and then to the hospital, but when that wore off, reality came crashing down—in waves. Wracked with unbearable pain, he screamed in agony and confusion, desperate to know why he couldn’t move.
When he finally convinced a nurse to explain what was wrong, her answer hit him like a freight train.
35. He Faced The Painful Truth
Danko’s relief at surviving quickly turned to horror when he learned the extent of his injuries: His neck and back had broken in six places, and he’d narrowly avoided losing his right eye. Lucky to be alive? Sure—but he was also drowning in guilt. When his bandmates visited, Danko broke down, tearfully apologizing for derailing everything.
As if months in traction weren’t punishment enough, someone else was about to drop another shocker that would change everything.
36. He Was In For A Shock
The Band was tighter than family, so hiring a replacement for Danko was never an option. Still, with their entire future on pause, the pressure on Danko to recover was already immense. Then, in a plot twist straight out of a soap opera, Danko’s girlfriend Grace sat on the side of his hospital bed and gave him the news…
37. He Had To Grow Up…Fast
In an unavoidable case of wrong place, wrong time, Grace announced that she was pregnant. Danko, with his jaw likely on the floor, must have looked like the opposite of every girl’s fantasy—a giant scar on his face and a shaved head with a metal brace bolted to it—and yet, he did the only honorable thing…
38. He Was Highly Motivated
Even flat on his back in a hospital bed, Danko knew how to make a moment count. He proposed to Grace right then and there—and she said yes. Suddenly, the hyperactive wild child was staring down the ultimate challenge: stay perfectly still. He needed to heal his battered body if he wanted to start playing music and building a life for his new family.
Luckily, Danko had grit in his DNA. As Robbie Robertson said, Danko was from “tough, hard-working stock, and it showed in how quickly he was recovering”.
39. He Made History
Battered but unbroken, Danko and The Band eventually made their concert debut in San Francisco in 1969—and the psychedelic hippie haven didn’t know what hit it. In a sea of tie-dye and surrealism, there were a bunch of dudes wearing flannel, playing fiddles and accordions, and singing about the beauty of small-town life.
Audiences may not have quite got it at first, but Music from Big Pink became a commercial and critical triumph. Danko and company weren’t just breaking the mold, they were creating an entirely new one.
40. He Was In His Stadium Rock Era
Reunited and it feels so…tense? In 1974, Bob Dylan and The Band joined forces for a massive world tour and this time around, The Band got to play a set of their own tunes as well. The demand for tickets was reaching Taylor Swift-level hysteria but with sold-out shows and venues were bigger than anything they had ever played, the stakes were sky-high.
Could they handle the pressure, or would the cracks start to show?
41. He Was Put Through The Wringer
As the grueling 1974 tour was limping to an end, journalists couldn’t help but notice something troubling: Danko’s voice was starting to crack and give out on the few songs where he took the lead. But his vocal cords weren’t the only thing taking a hit. Danko’s work-hard, play-harder lifestyle was catching up with him—and at one party, things went a little too far.
42. He Rocked Too Hard
What do you get when you mix rock stars, a hotel room, and a wild night? Well, in Rick Danko’s case, the party was over when Leslie West from the band Mountain fell on him—and snap went his wrist. No big deal, right? It’s not like he needed to, you know, use it to play music for thousands of fans every night.
Despite being stuck in a cast, Danko refused to let it slow him down. When you’re Rick Danko, even a broken wrist isn’t enough to stop the show.
43. He Earned High Praise
Not only did The Band win over fans and critics alike, but Danko had one admirer who stood out from the crowd: Eric Clapton. The guitar legend raved about Danko, admitting, “Rick’s singing has had a tremendous influence on me…you have to be a great musician before you can sing like that”.
Unfortunately, Clapton didn’t just gush over Danko—he left his mark in other ways too…
44. He Had His Demons
It’s a tale as old as rock ’n’ roll: With fame and success come temptations, and for many bands, the pressures of the spotlight lead to a spiral of, er, indulgences. The Band was no exception, and Robbie Robertson was getting frustrated at watching bandmates Danko, Helm, and Manuel binge drink with pal Eric Clapton and dive into the dark world of harder substances.
45. He Was In Deep
Even for the most able-bodied musicians, touring can be a physical and mental grind. For Danko, however, it was a different beast altogether. All those years on the road took their toll and the lingering pain from his accidents didn’t help. As Robertson later revealed, “The best painkiller, of course, is opiates, and heroin kept creeping back under the door for some time now…I worried that Garth and I had three junkies in our group”.
Robertson admitted he felt helpless in the face of this monster. The cracks in their brotherhood were starting to show.
46. His Group Was On Its Last Legs
As much as Robertson loved his “brothers,” he knew it was time to chart a new course. His exit plan? A grand farewell concert for The Band on Thanksgiving Day 1976. To drum up excitement, the group appeared on Saturday Night Live a few weeks before the big event. One night, during the week-long rehearsals, SNL legend John Belushi decided to pay them a visit and, wow, did he know how to make an entrance…
47. He Had The Hookup
Like a scene out of an SNL sketch, Belushi burst into The Band’s hotel room and cut to the chase, asking who had the happy dust. Roberston calmly told Belushi that Danko’s dealer would be showing up soon, and Belushi lit up like a Christmas tree. “Where’s Rick? I like him. I gotta talk to Rick,” he declared.
What followed was pure chaos—a meeting of comedic and rock ’n’ roll madness.
48. He Let The Good Times Roll
At long last, the dealer arrived. He handed Danko a paper package and Danko immediately started to pour the powdery contents onto a dresser. “Come on Rick, don’t be shy,” Belushi urged. Rick laughed and poured out some more. Belushi snorted up half of it and joked about no longer needing a snack.
49. He Danced His Last Waltz
If you’re going to go out, then why not go out with a bang? The Band’s farewell concert wasn’t just any goodbye—it was a full-circle moment. Held at the same San Francisco venue where it all began back in 1969, the star-studded event made for a memorable Thanksgiving.
In fact, all 5,000 fans in attendance even dined on turkey with all the trimmings, but that was just the appetizer for one of the most legendary concerts in music history.
50. He Was Surrounded By Chaos
Speaking of star-studded, legendary director Martin Scorsese filmed the event, turning it into one of the greatest rock documentaries of all time. However, the behind-the-scenes action was more dramatic than anything onscreen. Scorsese himself later admitted that he was using nose candy heavily during the shoot, and tensions within the band were about to boil over.
51. He Had Fans In High Places
Some members of The Band were bitter about how the film spotlighted Robbie Robertson, but a few outsiders noticed that Danko quietly captured the spotlight. Bernie Taupin, Elton John’s legendary songwriting partner, even wrote a letter to Rolling Stone: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Rick look that good. He was trim, fit, and handsome, and played and sang beautifully. Demons may have chased him and consumed him years later, but on that glorious night, he looked like a rock and roll angel”.
52. He Kept On Keeping On
After The Band called it quits, Danko kept himself busy and was the first member to release a solo album. Unfortunately, without his band of brothers by his side, he wasn’t able to capture the same magic, and the album flopped. In 1983, in a quest to reignite that spark, The Band reformed—but this time without Robbie Robertson.
Of course, the vibe was different, but on March 4, 1986, it took a very dark turn.
53. His Bandmate Was In Trouble
There’s no shame in the nostalgia act game, but the 1980s version of The Band wasn’t exactly the powerhouse that was once grabbing headlines and playing to sold-out stadiums. Perhaps The Band’s pianist Richard Manual was feeling a bit down about playing the Cheek to Cheek Lounge deep in an Orlando suburb. It is also likely that his long history of drinking and substance issues probably didn’t help his state of mind.
Whatever it was, after the Cheek to Cheek show, he took a desperate step inside the bathroom of the Quality Inn while his wife slept in the next room.
54. His Bandmate Couldn’t Cope
On March 4, Rick Danko had no idea that he was about to experience one of the darkest moments of his life. That same morning, his bandmate Richard Manuel’s wife woke up, and when she didn’t see her husband, she assumed he was already on the tour bus. But when she went into the bathroom, she made a horrifying discovery…
55. He Was Forced To Face The Unthinkable
Manuel had taken his own life. Overcome with shock, Manuel’s wife screamed and ran to find Danko and Helm. When they got to the room, they faced a nightmarish scene: Manuel had used his belt to hang himself from the curtain rod. It took a shell-shocked Danko and Helm five excruciating minutes to get their friend down.
56. He Couldn’t Fix It
Once Danko and Helm freed Manuel, they put him on the bed and Danko’s wife tried desperately to revive him, but it was no use. For Danko, the devastating loss only fueled his struggles with substances, sending him further down a destructive path.
57. He Made The Performance Of A Lifetime
At Richard Manuel’s funeral, Danko paid tribute to his bandmate in a way no one would soon forget. As he performed “I Shall Be Released”—one of Manuel’s most famed songs—Danko turned to the mourners and asked them to join him in singing the choruses. When the raw, heartfelt tribute was over, there was not a dry eye in the room.
In just a few short years, Danko would face yet another devastating loss.
58. He Faced More Heartbreak
Danko’s wild lifestyle cast a long shadow, and his son Eli followed in his father’s footsteps. While attending college, Eli went on a drinking binge that ended in unthinkable tragedy. According to his dormmates, Eli had been at a party where he consumed 151-proof booze. By 2:00 am, he was very inebriated and stumbled back to his dorm room…
59. He Couldn’t Escape Tragedy
A few hours after Eli had returned to his room, his friends tried to wake him, only to find that he had choked on his own vomit in his sleep. The coroner later remarked that Eli was so inebriated that “when he went to get sick, he probably didn’t even realize he was sick”. The devastating incident underscored the tragic toll of excess on the Danko family.
60. He Needed His “Medicine”
For Danko, music was a lifeline—but it wasn’t always enough to quiet his demons. His addiction often took center stage, and the struggle to get his “medicine” followed him, especially on tour. In the late 90s, while performing in Japan, Danko thought he had a foolproof plan to feed the monkey on his back. Spoiler: It didn’t work.
61. He Was Busted Big Time
How do you say “dumb” in Japanese? Danko’s wife tried to smuggle the seriously illicit substance to him in Japan by tucking it into a magazine and shipping it via courier. Unfortunately, Japanese authorities intercepted the package, and they were not amused. Danko’s reckless plan not only earned him a 10-week stint behind bars, but it also put a big damper on his ability to tour internationally.
62. He Turned Over A New Leaf
That run-in with the law was the wake-up call Danko needed to ditch the needles and start living clean. But as many addicts know, trading one vice for another is an all-too-common trap. For Danko, that new vice was food.
By 1999, his transformation was shocking.
63. His Recovery Was Not A Straight Path
Tragically, Danko’s attempt to lead a healthier life only brought new struggles. A former producer of Danko’s saw him perform in 1999 and estimated that his weight had ballooned to 350 pounds and the toll on his health was undeniable. A journalist at Danko’s show on December 7, 1999, said Danko had to stop the show and retreat backstage to catch his breath.
No one in the audience that night could have known they were witnessing his final performance.
64. He Was Not A Picture Of Health
Before Danko’s final performance, a journalist sat down with him for what would become a bittersweet interview. The journalist noted that Danko chain-smoked throughout their conversation, his complexion sallow and his voice raspy. Despite his declining health, Danko’s spirits remained high.
65. He Had High Hopes
When asked about the future, Danko smiled and said, “I’m making music, you know? I’ve got three different record projects that I’m working on right now”. Tragically, he would never complete those projects. Just days later, the world would lose the soulful voice of The Band forever.
66. He Slipped Away
On December 10, 1999, just one day after celebrating his 56th birthday, Danko’s wife made a heartbreaking discovery. She found him lifeless in bed at their home near Woodstock. Years of hard living had finally caught up with him, and he passed peacefully in his sleep. It was a quiet end to a turbulent life.
67. He Was A Positive Force
Rick Danko left an unforgettable impression on everyone who crossed his path. His bandmates remembered him with deep admiration and affection. Garth Hudson praised his three standout talents: “playing the bass, singing, and being a humorist”. Robbie Robertson described him as “the most outgoing, spiritually uplifting member of The Band”. Even Ronnie Hawkins remarked on Danko’s infectious happiness and undeniable talent, cementing his place as a beloved figure in music history.
